WWF Oasis of Persano

In the silence of the water and the reeds, the otter draws his trail and the river becomes life.

L’WWF Oasis of Persano extends for about 110 hectares in the municipalities of Campaign e Greenhouses (SA), along the middle course of the Sele River.
Inserted in the Foce Sele-Tanagro Nature Reserve and recognised as wetland of international importance (Ramsar Convention), the oasis represents a ecological crossroads for migratory birds and a refuge for rare species such as the otter (Lutra lutra), which here finds one of the last Italian habitats.
Nature trails, observation huts and a visitor centre make the area usable, while preserving its environmental integrity.

Water flows and reflects life that wants to resist.

The oasis basin is a artificial reservoir connected to the Sele River: approx. 70 hectares are occupied by water, while the rest consists of reeds e hygrophilous forest, key environments for aquatic and migratory fauna.
Aquatic vegetation includes semi-emergent species such as Potamogeton e Ceratophyllum, while along the riparian banks are willows, alders e rates, which offer refuge to birds such as the coot and the diving ducks.

A silence that listens to the beating of wings of those who see no echoes.

The oasis is known for the presence of the otter, one of the most threatened species in Italy, which finds one of its last safe havens here.
The following have been surveyed over 180 bird species, making the area an ideal destination for the bird-watching.
To gain access you must booking guided tours, with varying times and methods depending on the season.
Observers and photography sheds allow the respectful sighting of fauna, promoting a sustainable nature tourism and compatible with environmental conservation.
