Architecture

Stone, time, the city is storytelling.

The streets of the countryside guard centuries of history and architecture, in a harmonious balance between the sacred and the civil. Strolling through the alleys of the historic centre means passing through different eras: the Middle Ages of castles, the Renaissance of noble palaces, the Baroque of the richly decorated churches. From Pontifical Basilica of St. Mary of Peace at Ducal Palace, through the Gerione Castle and the ancient city gates, each place tells of the cultural stratification of the territory. The crypt of Santa Maria della Pace, with its frescoes and burials, bears witness to the deep spirituality of a people tied to their roots. Palaces such as Gibboni, Cervone, Pastore-Alinante or Rivelli show the artistic wealth of the families that made Campagna great between the 16th and 18th centuries. The town's historical-architectural itinerary is a diffuse open-air museum, where stone becomes words and history, a shared tale.

A harmonious historic centre with a medieval village, Baroque basilicas and noble palaces.

Campagna is a mosaic of epochs, a town that has managed to preserve its architectural identity over the centuries, blending medieval, Renaissance and Baroque elements in a balance of extraordinary harmony. The visitor who walks its ancient streets walks through history: the walls, portals, stairways and cloisters are pages from a book carved in stone.

L’urban installation still preserves the layout of the ancient medieval village, which arose at the foot of the Gerione castle, on the hill overlooking the Tenza valley. The streets, narrow and winding, open into sudden squares and widenings that hold fountains, loggias and fascinating architectural perspectives. The historical doors - Porta Sirino, Porta della Giudeca and Porta Dogana - mark the entrance to the ancient heart of the city, testifying to its ancient function as a fortified and commercial centre.

In the centre of the urban fabric stands the Pontifical Basilica of St. Mary of Peace, a majestic Baroque building and spiritual symbol of Campagna. Built from the 17th century on the remains of an earlier collegiate church, the basilica houses works of art, polychrome marble altars and the statue of Our Lady of Peace, the town's patron saint. The crypt underneath, linked to the confraternity of Monte dei Morti, is one of the most striking testimonies of Campagnese sacred art, with its interweaving of faith, history and memory.

A few steps away rise the noble palaces that shaped the modern image of the city between the 17th and 18th centuries: the Ducal Palace, residence of the Pironti feudal lords, with its imposing Baroque atrium; the Gibboni Palace with its monumental gateway dated 1785; and the Cervone Palaces, Shepherd-Alinant, Maffey and De Riso, each with its own inner cloister, stone courtyards and Renaissance decorations. These mansions tell of the time when Campagna, elevated to a marquisate by Charles V, became a centre of cultural and administrative prestige.

No less important are the minor places of worship, often hidden in alleyways: the Church of the Holy Name of God, the Church of St John the Baptist, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Church of Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio testify to the devotion and wealth of the local brotherhoods. The monasteries and convents, such as that of the Augustinians with the Church of the Annunziata and the’St Martin's Episcope, They complete the picture of a city that has been a centre of spirituality and culture for centuries.

Visiting Campagna means entering a unique urban landscape, where time is never motionless but dialogues with the present. Every restoration, every event, every extraordinary opening contributes to bringing back to life a heritage that belongs not only to memory, but to the everyday life of a community that guards its history with pride and awareness.
