Dioscuri Theatre

Theatre production ranges from comedy to drama, from Italian to dialect, from classical to contemporary

Dioscuri Theatre”was founded in 1999 to continue and renew the activity already carried out since 1982 by the “Amici del Teatro” company. In over 40 years of continuous presence in the Campagna area, the Association has progressively broadened and consolidated its vision and mission, which are based on the social and pedagogical-educational values of a theatre that is not just entertainment.
Le theatrical research activities are combined with those of lifelong learningThe members of the Association have a solid foundation as actors and theatre practitioners, which are punctually brought into play in the logic of “doing, seeing and reflecting on theatre”, which is strongly shared with AGITA, a training organisation accredited by MIM (formerly MIUR).
The theatre production ranges from comedy to drama, from Italian to dialect, from classical to contemporary, from children's theatre to musical comedy.

Many authors are represented, classic and modern, Italian and foreign.

The productions are characterised by an innovative directorial and interpretative slant, which tends to capture the essence of the works, bringing their value up to date and avoiding customary repetitions.

In addition to successfully participating in countless National and international festivals, TdD organises important events such as the International review of educational and social theatre THE GERION, dedicated to children and young people, (now in its 19th edition), the SeleTeatroFest, International Festival of Contemporary Theatre and the more recent Condi-Visions. The Association has thus refined and strengthened its organisational and entrepreneurial skills at the service of the territory. Through dogged and capillary work, the languages of theatre have been disseminated among generations and generations of young people, thanks to the Permanent Theatre Workshop Traditions&Tradition and the DRAO workshops in schools.

To young people, thanks to the Erasmus (as many as 12 projects), was offered the opportunity to compare and grow with peers from other countries, sharing a passion for theatre. Other European projects developed by TdD are: “Europe for Citizens - European Memory” and “Young Entrepreneurs”, in collaboration with the company Controluce s.a.s.

The latter project made it possible to host young people from other countries for a few months, to develop and exchange entrepreneurial experiences in the field of art and entertainment.

Attention to the territory with its history and traditions has always been the basis of research work, reflections, but also of contamination, with the aim of making young people aware of the great cultural heritage, both material and immaterial, that they have the duty to preserve and disseminate. The project A different story, In particular, it explores, in an original way and from several points of view, one of the most dramatic, but also most charged with humanity, pages in the history of Campagna.

The “Teatro dei Dioscuri” Association is registered with the U.I.L.T. (Unione Italiana Libero Teatro), a national federation of amateur theatre, divided into regional structures; it was a founding member of U.I.L.T. Campania.

Many were the autors staged, classics and modern, Italian and foreign. Among them: Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo, Pirandello, Scarpetta, Petito, Viviani, Silvestri, Terron, Santanelli, Silvestri, Scabia, Fo, Camerini, Pasculli, Carlo Maria Pensa, Fayad, Chekhov, Shakespeare, Ionesco, Tirso De Molina, Chapman, Pertwee, Graham, Benfield, Quintal, Orwell. La International Review of Educational & Social Theatre “Il Gerione”, The event, created in 2005 by the Associazione Teatro dei Dioscuri and strongly supported by the Municipal Administration of Campagna, is an annual appointment, in which shows produced by schools and associations working in the social field are presented.

The 6 organisations signing the Memorandum of Understanding supporting the Review are: MUNICIPALITY OF CAMPAGNA, ASS. CULT. “TEATRO DEI DIOSCURI”, the 3 Institutes of the Municipality of Campagna (IST. COMPRENSIVO “CAMPAGNA CAPOLUOGO”, IST. COMPRENSIVO “G. PALATUCCI”, IST. D'ISTR. SUPERIORE “T. CONFALONIERI”), PRO LOCO CITTÀ DI CAMPAGNA.

“The Gerion” has two big goals:

  • affirm the principles of Educational and Social Theatre, with a series of activities (performances, debates with student juries, workshops, training courses);
  • become one of the Major Events of the Municipality of Campagna and the territory, for the relaunch of its cultural, artistic and tourist image at national and international level.

It consists of a series of activities:

  • representation and viewing of performances by schools and associations;
  • active participation in theatre workshops by operators, teachers and children;
  • Participation in conferences, seminars and discussion and training events on Educational and Social Theatre;

The Sele d'Oro Award”was born in 1988 out of the desire to rediscover one's past, to recover traditions that were gradually disappearing, to enhance one's resources. 1994 saw the birth of the National Theatre Festival, which worthily accompanies the other sections of the Prize with an original and committed slant.

Since then the Fnational theatre summer accompanied the Sele d'Oro“ Prize”, attracting companies and artists from all over Italy to Oliveto Citra.

The Festival's slant is contemporary (texts published in the last 50 years are admitted) and of civil and social commitment.

The basic choice of the Artistic Director Antonio Caponigro, In fact, in line with the slant of the Prize, it was to forego classic titles, focusing instead on texts by mostly living authors. This has allowed the Festival to remain hooked on current affairs, often managing to cross-fertilise with the themes dealt with by the Prize seminars and leaving significant traces of reflection in the audience.

The project, through non-formal education, mediated by the languages of theatre, aims to foster and produce processes of social and behavioural change, in which the different generations once again engage in confrontation and dialogue. With a view not only to doing, but also to seeing and reflecting on theatre, a review of Family theatre (with appropriately selected performances) with an accompanying viewing pathway (fact sheets, debate, etc.).

The shows are performed on Sundays, in the afternoon at the’Auditorium of the “G. Palatucci” Comprehensive Institute”.

This expression encapsulates the meaning of the research work that Teatro dei Dioscuri, with commitment and courage, has been carrying out for several years. Tradition means in-depth study of the past which is, in turn, the starting point for research into the new. In this sense it is subtle, dangerous, but interesting, the passage from the Tradition to innovation through inevitable Betrayal. On this thin thread lies the work of Teatro dei Dioscuri, which wants to offer its modest contribution to the National and International Research Theatre.

The Permanent Theatre Workshop aims to enable students, theatre practitioners and schools, through a three-year course and at different levels, to deepen their understanding of the salient aspects of theatre, through the continuous search for original and personal forms of expression and communication, renewing the social function of theatre.

The Permanent Laboratory relies on the Artistic Consultancy by Michele Monetta, director of the ICRA PROJECT (International Centre for Research on Actors) in Naples, and on the collaboration of the’AGITA, Training Body accredited by MIM (formerly MIUR), U.I.L.T. (Italian Union of Free Theatre), U.I.L.T. Campania and several Italian Universities and Theatre Academies.

The DRAO“ workshop” (from the Greek “opero”, “I act”) has been consolidated at the “G. Palatucci” Institute, after a history of almost 20 years, becoming one of the flagship projects, actively involving the pupils.

Several generations of students have passed through the “DRAO” Workshop, enriching themselves and the entire Campania community with ethical and cultural values.

The Educational and social theatre is above all a strategy, a path, even before its natural product, the final staging, and, thanks to the different languages that characterise it, it cuts across all disciplines.

Theatre is not only about doing, but also about seeing and reflecting: a fundamental opportunity to develop the spirit of observation and a critical sense.

The preparation for the viewing begins in the classroom, through reading and understanding the auditorium sheet, the show is seen in the auditorium, and discussed in the post-show debate, which becomes an opportunity for reflection and confrontation.

The theatre is indeed a privileged place for the cultural growth and the training of childreni.

Performance “A DIFFERENT STORY” was one of the events planned within the M-EMO-histoRY“ transnational project” financed by the programme “Europe for Citizens - European Memory Strand”.

Project leader was the Municipality of Rezekne (Latvia) in partnership with Teatro dei Dioscuri (Italy), Kedainiai Regional Museum (Lithuania), Palatul Copiilori in Iasi (Romania). "Europe for Citizens” is a programme that aims to raising awareness of memory, history, common values of the European Union and promote social engagement, intercultural dialogue and the democratic and civic participation of citizens.

Each of the partner countries shared their people's memories of racial persecution during World War II, using the languages of art and theatre.

Teatro dei Dioscuri told Europe the story of Campagna through a series of research, study and dissemination activities which concluded with the emotional and multi-sensory performance “A Different Story”.

Attention to the territory with its history and traditions has always been the basis for research work, reflection, but also contamination, with the aim of giving young people an understanding of the great cultural, tangible and intangible heritage, which they have a duty to preserve and disseminate.

“A different story” is a performance that takes place in the former sites of the Countryside Internment Camp, former Dominican Convent of St Bartholomew, which today houses the Museum Itinerary of Memory and Peace - “Giovanni Palatucci” Study Centre”.

A story that tells many little-known individual stories of ordinary women and men whose lives were swept away and sometimes swept away by the great official History.

The performance accompanies visitors who share emotions and fragments of life of internees, The campers, mostly Jews, of the Campagna Internment Camp and relive the events of sharing and solidarity between the internees and the Campagna community, simple and generous in its humanity.

It transports visitors into a dimension that is at times realistic, at times dreamlike, in which they encounter men forced into overcrowded environments, men bereaved, torn from their loved ones, often sucked by fate into concentration camps from which they will never return.

Many of the internees buried the memory of those days in silence, but sooner or later the memory resurfaces strongly and spreading it becomes a duty, ethical and moral.
