Spirituality

Faith, silence, the path is prayer.

The religiosity of Campagna is a thread that binds centuries of tradition and popular devotion. The liturgical calendar of the city is marked by celebrations involving the entire community, such as the feast of Saint Antoninus Abbot, patron saint of the city, combining religious rituals and social moments. The Shrine of Our Lady of Avigliano, nestled in the woods of Mount Ripalta, represents one of the most significant spiritual places in the area, a pilgrimage destination that has been handed down for generations. Among the best known churches are the Blessed Virgin of Carmel - Mount of the Dead, the Church of the Holy Name of God, and the Complex of the Holy Spirit with its catacombs. The brotherhoods, with their processions and historical costumes, guard rituals that tell of the city's deepest identity. Every bell toll, every candle light on festive nights testifies to a faith that is also a sense of community and belonging.

A spiritual heritage that lives on between basilicas, confraternities and places of devotion.

The history of Campagna is inseparable from its faith. Between the Picentini mountains and the waters of the Tenza, this ancient town has built its identity around spirituality, becoming over the centuries place of pilgrimage, meditation and community life. Its churches, confraternities and sanctuaries guard a heritage that spans the ages, interweaving liturgy, art and popular tradition.

The religious heart of the city is the Pontifical Basilica of St. Mary of Peace, built in the 17th century on an earlier medieval church. Its majestic Baroque architecture, with its imposing dome and polychrome marble interior, tells of the Campagnese people's devotion to Our Lady of Peace, proclaimed patron saint of the town. In the crypt below is the chapel of the Brotherhood of the Mount of the Dead and Blessed Virgin of Carmel, one of the most evocative places in the city, with a small ossuary and evidence of ancient devotional rites.

Shrines, confraternities and ancient rites: a living spirituality uniting community and landscape.

Among the most powerful symbols of Campagnese religiosity is the Sshrine of Our Lady of Avigliano, located in the woods at an altitude of seven hundred metres. Every August, thousands of faithful walk the road up to the sanctuary to participate in the Feast of the Assumption, a tradition that unites devotion and collective identity. The novenas, songs and procession through the chestnut groves constitute a choral rite that has been renewed for centuries and still profoundly marks the life of the community.

The city holds an extraordinary number of sacred places, each linked to confraternities and religious orders that have shaped its history: the Church of the Holy Saviour and St. Antoninus, with the thaumaturgic column venerated by the faithful; the Church of the Holy Name of God and the Church of St John the Baptist, examples of 18th-century devotional architecture; the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario and that of the Our Lady of Constantinople, which testify to the vitality of the Marian cult over the centuries.

On the hills surrounding the city, on the other hand, are the places of recollection and silence: the’Hermitage of San Michele on Monte Nero, an ancient rock cult site, and the’Abbey of Santa Maria la Nova, surrounded by greenery and formerly home to Benedictine monks. The monasteries of the Augustinians, of the Camaldolese and the Franciscan Minor of the Conception complete a spiritual itinerary that makes Campagna an authentic treasure chest of faith.

Each confraternity, each statue, each procession tells a different way of experiencing spirituality. The celebrations of Saint Antoninus Abbot, the Holy Week services and the patronal festivities bring citizens and pilgrims together every year in a web of rituals, sounds and scents that evoke an authentic, popular and welcoming religiousness.

In Campagna, faith is not just memory, but living experience: a collective breath that spans the centuries and continues to shape the community and its spiritual landscape.
